So! Apple has finally approved version two. It probably took them as long as it did because this version is just so damn awesome! Well I think so, hope you do too.
What is new in Version 2? Well a whole bunch of things. Note that these are only on the paid version. I'm not yet sure which features I'll add to the free version. If you have thoughts, post a comment...
1. Images: You can now attach images to recipes. Personally, I don't use this much but it is fun and a _lot_ of people asked for it. So there it is.
2. Google Doc Sync: For those of you with a Google Docs account, this will save you a ton of time over putting your recipes on blogs and downloading them. It is a new feature so it may have some bugs. Let me know what you think. Note: Images don't sync up with Google Docs. Fun tip: If you sync a recipe to Google Docs, then share it with someone, you'll both have a copy of the same recipe that you can keep in sync.
3. Editing: I keep getting complaints about the recipe editing functionality so I made a few improvements there. Some bug fixes, some performance enhancements, and a cancel button when you are editing a field.
4. Tumblr: Tumblr rarely works well. They keep changing their HTML layout and even when you tell it to let you edit the HTML of a post, they add more HTML. I've emailed their support alias several times but I get nothing from them. Anyway, I've made it work again so you should be able to post and import. No telling when they'll break that again.
5. Twitter: You can post a note to Twitter from the app. Honestly, I don't see the utility of this, but some people asked for it and it was easy so there you go! Twitter away.
As always, let me know what you think.

i really like this app, but I have some problem after update to Version 2. When I was using Version 1, there's no problem typing Other language such as Japanese and Korean, but I cannot type Korean for title anymore. I can still type any language for directions and ingredients.
Hi Jiny!
Thanks for the heads up. I did use some new text entry code for the title. I'll try to fix this in the next version. Sorry about that!
Can you tell me if existing titles continue to work?
Great improvements!
Still, when ever I go into a recipe to make a change, my tags change form 1st letter capitalized to not and I have to re-edit the tag to make it right again.
I have had several "Out of memory" Reset my iPod error screens come up.
Two other things I noticed this morning.
Before when I imported a recipe with a spacing between paragraphs in the directions, that was how it showed up in TinyKitchen. Now the space is gone and I have to go into the recently imported recipe and edit it to make the changes. Previous recipes appear to be fine.
Also, when I now import a recipe with an accent over a character, like sauté, it imports like sauté
Again, previously imported recipes appear to be fine.
Hi Michael,
Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I do need to make the memory error messages a little bit less aggressive, I'll work on that.
Tags: That issue has been around for a while, I'll work on fixing it in the next release.
Funny characters: Do you see that in any recipe field or just the title?
Is it only with blog imports?
It reformats the special characters in the title, ingredients and directions.
I do import from blogs.
Previous imports are fine.
Also the previous directions that have the space between paragraphs are fine. Just the new ones lose the space between paragraphs.
Thanks for the reply.
I can sync a recipe from Google Docs to tinykitchen, but not from tinykitchen to Google Docs. I have tried turning protect google docs On and Off. Also, all tags go to lower case; in addition if I make a tag Main Dish... it becomes main and dish... eg tags: Brunch, Main Dish, Vegetable would show up on tinykitchen as brunch, main, dish, vegetable. A cuisine field would be good.
Since the upgrade to v2.0 it wants to re-import all my blog recipes every time I sync. It used to italicize and uncheck previously imported recipes before the update, now it treats all the recipes as new. I sync with a blogspot account. At first I thought it was because I had tagged the previous ones on the phone, but I tested by syncing twice in a row and sure enough it wanted to import the exact same ones again.
Curt:
The tag case is a known issue (in fact was intentional since people were losing recipes because they had some tags with caps and some without). I'll be putting in a switch to turn that behavior on and off in future versions.
With Google Docs: Are you able to get any recipes sent to google docs or will it just not overwrite them once they are there?
Armchair Chef:
That is odd and not what I've seen with my test blogs. Would you be willing to share your blog address with me?
Yes it's armchair-chef.blogspot.com
I am also experiencing the accented e issue same as MichaelO, and I can give you repeatable steps. I added a recipe for Buerre Manié to my blog. When I select Download from Blogs on the phone, this recipe shows up as "Buerre Manié" in the list to import as well as in the recently added list. And hopefully this will help too:
é = Alt+0233
à = Alt+0195
© = Alt+0169
Interestingly enough, the word "jalapeño" shows up as "jalapeño" in the body of a synced salsa recipe (also on the same blog linked in a previous post). '±' = Alt+0177 according to the Character Map utility.
Hey guys,
Quick Update:
I've identified a fix for the character encoding bug. I'm also fixing a collection of bugs that cause it to crash in 3.0 and correcting a few asks.
I know that some of you aren't happy with the way tags are handled. I'm going to add a switch to control that but it'll be the release after this one. Sorry.
As for when: I'll give it to apple in the next couple of days and then... well it depends on how long it takes them to approve it. Hopefully not long!
Thanks for your patience on this.
Hi, I just purchased Tinykitchen and I think it's great! I love to cook and share recipes. I have over a 100 cookbooks and this a great way to share, get new ones and organize everything. I love the shopping list feature. But I am having a few problems I'm hoping somebody can help me.
1- I keep getting memory issues all the time. Which I do not understand. Or why I have to purchase another app to fix this.
2-I'm having problems with search function not finding anything giving err download error can't find item. On something as simple as waffles? Can somebody help me?thanks, sean
Hello
Have used Tinykitchen since before version 2 and been very pleased. Thx for a great app :-)
But now i'm having big problems with crashes. The app crashes everytime i try to sync with Google Docs. It can upload one recipe and then it crashes
The app also crashes everytime I delete a recipe. It deletes the app and then crashes.
I use a iPhone 3G 16Gb that is jailbroken.
BR
Jens
Hey Nat:
I've got an update coming which might fix the crashing issues with the jailbroken iphone. I don't have a jailbroken iphone to test on, but I think I've got some of them, so that should help you out.
Sean:
The Search function sadly, give the same error when the search engine I use is off line or you don't have an internet connection.
And I need to make the memory warning less aggressive.
These aren't in the most recent fix, but they'll be in the next one.
Are you still getting errors when you search?
Yes I am on and off. I am on my iPhone. It's strange becuase it's not consistant. One moment it searches fine and then the next instant it stops and gives me that error mess. Then a couple hours later i'll try again and then it works. But Most the time I'm getting the error. On top of the memory issues. Thanks sean
Sean,
Thanks! That is good to know. I'll see what I can do about making search work a bit better and give more meaningful errors in the next release.
Thanks Mason. That would be great! I really love the app. I'm still learning the app and have not tried adding recipes yet. But I plan to soon. Thanks again sean :-)
Thanks for the reply Mason.
I'm looking forward to the update.
Nat
Please Help!!
I don't know why, it was working before, but now if i make ANY changes to my google doc, suddenly the program can't snyc with it. I can type in a recipie on my iTouch and sync and it always goes to the tiny kitchen folder, but then lets say i change 1 little ingredient number from 2 to 3, suddently when I sync it always FAILS to upload that recipe, even if i change the number back to a 2. What is going on!? I was super excited at first but now I'm bummed out. I've been trouble shooting for the longest time trying to figure why it won't sync to my itouch if I change the google doc in any way.
Just to expand a little. Everything was working just PERFECT at the beginning, it was great, but I didnt' like the recipes the program came with so I just deleted them all one by one on the iTouch. It was at that point that this started to happen. Any clues for me? Is there a ways to like "reset an ap"? Maybe if I could just go back this glitch woule be gone.
Hey TJ,
I'd be happy to look into this. Any chance you could share some of the recipes with me? My google docs account is tinykitchen@sandwormz.com
You share recipes with the share button on the top and right when you are looking at a document.
So is the problem just that you've uploaded a recipe to google docs and then you want to update it on your phone and then sync that change to google docs? If you delete the doc from google docs and then sync, will the new versio of the recipe be uploaded?
As far as a reset goes, you can simply delete the app and download it again. Apple won't charge you if you download an app you've already paid for (so long as you don't change itunes accounts or anything).
Mason,
Here's what I did. I started over completely to see if it would fix the problem.
I completely deleted the old ap and all the old google docs. Then i reloaded it like new.
I synced the 15 preset recipes that come with the ap to my google docs account. Success. (as always)
Then I go into google docs and I opened up "Spicy Garbonzo Beans" in google docs and just changed the "2 tbsp butter" to "3 tbsp butter". Thats ALL i changed. Then I saved and closed. Then I went back to the iTouch and clicked sync with google docs in the ap.
It ALWYAS says, "failed to DOWNLOAD recipe 'Spicy Garbonzo Beans'". (Because that's the recipe i just altered in google docs as explained above) Any recipie I alter in ANY WAY will never download to the iTouch. (It's funny because it worked fine at one point, then all the sudden it decided to stop and it's never worked since. I didn't change any system setting on the iTouch or anything)
So basically, any update, no matter how big or small I make to the google docs files will fail to transfer to the iTouch.
UPLOADING to google docs is no problem.
Does that make sence? I'm so lost.
Please help!! I really like this ap and want it to work.
Hey TJ,
Thanks for that additional info. I'll look into it.
It is possible that google has changed thing slightly and I'll have to update the program.
Has the update to 2.0 been given to Apple yet? Until the formating problems have been fixed this app has become unusable to me. Any idea when this update will happen?
Thanks
Hi Michael,
I'm sorry this is taking so long. I've had some 3.0 compatibility issues. It was submitted (again) today.
Just upgraded to Version 3.
The problem with special characters has been fixed. Accents over letters appear correctly.
My paragraphs still will not format correctly. They have a hard return between paragraphs and import without them. On the previous fix I could edit the recipe, put the return back in and it was fine. Now when I fix it in the Edit Recipe window it does not stay as a hard return. Goes back to a long run on sentence.
That appears worse than before.
It also has crashed more than before as well.
I import from my blog. Did 5 recipes the morning and crashed 6 times while editing them.
Just my feedback.
Thanks
Another observation.
All my previous recipes, (3200+) have lost the hard return between paragraphs as well.
Now they all have no space between the paragraphs. I tried double spacing, but no luck.
If I go into a previously entered recipe to edit it.
I notice that on the "Directions" window there is nothing. I click on the directions window and there are my directions, with a blank line starting them off. I place the curser in front of the first word and hit the backspace arrow to delete the blank line and bring the first sentence up into the "Directions" window. Hit Save Edit and Save Recipe Buttons.
Then I check my saved recipe out and the directions appear twice now as one huge run on sentence, no spacing between paragraphs and my tags have changed as well.
Hey Michael,
Sorry this hasn't made things better for you. Could you point me to a couple of recipes on your blog or google docs that don't work for you?
I'll specifically test for them in the next release which, if I can fix this formatting thing, will be soon.
Thanks
Here is a link to one recipe on my blog.
http://michaelo-myrecipes.blogspot.com/
Just wondered if you found the problem or had any ideas to the solution?
Thanks
I'll take that as a no!
Oops, sorry missed your last comment, I just started a new job (ie one that pays the bills :) so I haven't had time to do another release, but I've basically got it working so it shouldn't take much time. Maybe this weekend?
Just wondering if we will see an update to correct some of the issues mentioned here and above?
Thanks
Hmm!!
Time to try a different application I guess.
Here are some bugs I just found. When you hit the Resync button on the sync progress screen, the app crashes. Also, when you hit the arrow button in the recipe screen, this opens the menu to Add to Shopping List, Email Recipe menu. The cancel button at the bottom of this menu does not work. And just a personal note, I really like using fractions in my recipe. You need to start figuring out how to handle fractions. When I enter in Google Docs 10-1/2 cups, which is correct recipe format, the app translates this to 10 and -1/2 as the type of measurement with cups becoming part of the ingredient name.
I like this app especially now that it has google doc sync. One annoyance I have is the preloaded recipes. I wish the app either came with no preloaded recipes so I dont have to keep erasing them EVERY time I reinstall the app when not in use or have an easier delete function for recipes. Maybe you can make it to where you can check off all the recipes you dont want at the same time instead of having to go into edit for each recipe in order to delete. Other than that keep up the great work. Can't wait for the next release.
It seems none of the links on the app store currently work to purchase the full version. Tried directly from iPhone and from computer. Both said download unavailable.
Hi Hallie,
And Thanks! I saw that a couple of weeks ago and it was because I hadn't digitally signed apple's latest contract (bleh!) but after I did that it worked again. I just tried it this morning from another account and it worked... did this happen recently?
How can i delete ingredients from the ingredients list. Also is there a way to add ingredients to my recipe from the ingredients list so i dont double up on things, example "apple" & "apples", a bit silly to have both.
Hi Mason,
Did you develop your own app? I am looking for a developer to create an iPhone app for us. Please contact me at michelle@mojaradio.com if you are interested or if you can give me the contact for who developed this app for you?
Thanks
I love the Google Doc sync. My biggest problem with your app is that it doesn't use serving/yield. The recipe is the recipe, and it can be scaled up, which is fine. However, I sometimes need to go from 8 services down to 6. You really need to allow us to enter servings or yield and then do the scaling according to the servings.
Can you make the favorite section where I can manually organize it? I am tagging my recipes by the day of the week to help plan my meals.
I am keeping my recipes in a folder in google docs, is it possible to put them in that folder when syncing rather than me having to take time and clean up my inbox? My folder is called "tiny kitchen".
Hi Laura!
Recipes were supposed to go into the tinykitchen folder in Google docs and in fact they did until Google changes some things. It is on my list to fix it though to be honest it may be a while before I get to a new version.
To organize your own recipes are you aware that you can control the list of favorite tags under the "top rated recipes" just click on "organize recipes" then "new favorite tag" You can delete the other tags by clicking on them in this view and pressing the delete button.
Does that help?
I really love the idea of this program, but without the ability to place hard returns in the instruction part of the recipe, it's quite difficult to use it while cooking. I see that others have had this issue for a while. Is there a fix for it?
Thanks!
My main problem right now is that TinyKitchen tries to download all of the files I have at GoogleDocs whether or not it is a recipe. Is there some way to limit the folder TinyKitchen syncs to?
Before I buy the pro version I have a few questions: The app has functionality to sync with Google Docs, but can I type my recipe into Google Docs and then send it to the TinyKitchen App? I don't know how it would recognize the values for the different fields (ie ingredients, tags, etc) Would I have to create a blank recipe, sync it to Google Docs, modify it with Google Docs, and then sync it to TinyKitchen. Basically I'm wondering how I can use my computer to enter the recipes rather than having to type it is with the small iphone keyboard. Please email me at jarrettburningham@gmail.com
To get round Google Doc's downloading everything to your ipod, Create a different Google Doc account and keep and use one just for recipe's, It works for me!
Another tip I would like to pass on:
At the top of the Ingredients list I always put for Example Serves 6. I enter 6 in the quantity field and in the new Ingredient field I enter: SERVING~~~~~~~~~~~ This gives 6 SERVING~~~~~~~~~~~ and should I increase or decrease the quantity reflects the Change.
I've had this app about 3 months now and cannot get it to sync properly with Google docs. I'm IT literate and have been trying various options, to no avail.
What happens - I have 6 test recipes; when I sync with Google docs, this is what happens:
- One of the recipes drops from the iPhone app
- Next time, that recipe will come back but another one will drop from the app
- Sometimes, the tags get deleted
- Sometimes, part of the ingredients list gets deleted
- Sometimes, part of the directions gets deleted
- Variations of the above keep happening, in a completely random manner
- Sometimes inserting HTML code fixes it, but then it breaks again at the next sync
Help! I love the idea of this app want to start using it.
At first, I was very exciting about the Google Docs sync feature. However, I found the syncing function does not work very well. I have other Apps that sync with Google Docs as well, but it will only sync within its folder, not all the other documents I have in Google account. Is this something that you can look into?

Hi Cararina
As I said before, I had a problem with the Google Doc's, And my work round till we get a fix is:
Create another Google Doc's account with another email address (it does not have to be a Google email address example: tkipod@yahoo.com and use that just for your recipe files. my email is not a yahoo address and it's not a Google email address. and it works
Hi Denboy,
Thank you for your prompt reply!
I guess I will take your advise to create another Google Doc account for now until you can fix the problem.
Thanks for your hard work and looking for the good news!
I love this app!
There is only one drawback... When you type an ingredient into the new recipes section, it automaticly converts fractions into decimels. I would like it if I could use the fractions... If you can fix this in the next update, this app would be perfect!
Thanks!
i really like this!!!
Great improvements!
Thanks!!

Hi,
I've been using this app for a few months now without any problem but since this weekend I cannot sync with google docs anymore - it comes up with an error and suggests I check my password but it's been fine up until now - any suggestions? Thanks
I need help moving recipes from the free version to the upgraded version I just paid for.
Has there been a problem? I've followed all the tips for syncing with my Google docs, even reloaded my iPhone, etc. And I can't get anything to sync since last week. I use this app a lot too. The problem seems to be on Google's side. Anyone else having problems? Any resolution on the horizon?
Hi I love the concept of Tinykitchen but every time I try to enter or delete a recipe the app closes so I have to add items one at a time, reopening the app every time! Obviously not good! Please let me know if this can be fixed
Thanks Suzi

really unhappy with the crashing when trying to sync to google docs. Fix this pleaseeeeeee!
After upgrading to Iphone OS 4, the app closes suddenly when trying to save an edit or create a new recipe.
Has the author stopped support of the app? If so he should let us know.
It had the making of a great app but without the support and update it is slowly becoming useless!
Again what a pity.
Denis
I have waited for a good recipe app, dowloading and trying 10 or more different apps, and thought TinyKitchen was going to be the one. The features I realy wanted were:
1. Ability to enter recipes offline-you're often nowhere near a computer when you find a recipe you want to keep
2. Ability to backup recipes online. I opened a Twitter account for this reason, but found that syncing with GoogleDocs works well.
Other useful features include the ability to multiply ingredients according to numbers served, and a tagging system to aid specific meal or meal-idea retrieval possible. An image of the meal can now be attached as well.
However, despite all these excellent features, I cannot now use TinyKitchen as it crashes all the time, every time. This was not always the case, but I have been unable to use this once over the last few weeks - since installiing IOS 4.
I had an iPhone 3G (not 3GS) and updated the operating system to IOS 4. A couple of previously working apps now failed repeatedly. I thought this might have been due to the model's limited RAM (128 MB, I think), and although I could access previously entered recipes, trying to save ANY new ingredients resulted in being thrown back to the Home Screen, without fail.
I installed "FreeMemory", as suggested, but this did not solve the problem. I have also recently upgraded to an iPhone 4, with 32 GB storage and 512 MB RAM, and Tiny Kitchen still crashes withe every save.
I am not sure of the exact reason, but presume it is caused by problems with the app's access and use of RAM. Whatever the cause, has anyone else been able to use TinyKitchen on IOS 4? Is this a known, repeatable issue, or peculiar to my iPhones? Is there an available solution, or one available soon? I certsinly hope so, but for now will resume using one of my other less-featured, but infinitely more-reliable recipe apps.
Despite all these
I also purchased TinyKitchen thinking the application would be perfect for me. Unfortunately, it crashes whenever I try to do anything. I can look at the recipes that are included with the app, but if I try to enter a new recipe or edit an existing one, it crashes.
I see that other people are having the same problems. Is anything going to be done about it?
Here's what I don't know: why TinyKitchen keeps crashing; probably much the same reason a lot of apps crash.
Here's what I do know (albeit through deduction): TinyKitchen is all but sunk. Here's why. The major feature is the ability to sync with Google Docs. Around Mother's Day Google broke this and every other apps' ability to sync with GD because they have their own app now (G-Whizz! if you need it). They broke everyone else's ability to sync so you have to pay the $5 for their app to have that. Yeah, it sucks, but that's how Google does R&D.
So make it easier on yourself than I did. Ditch TK, download G-Whizz!, and move on. Yeah I know TK could scale recipes up and down for you, but that's really simple math.
loved the app until IOS 4.0 came out. Now it just crashes when I try and sync to google docs. If the developer has stopped supporting it, please let us know and I'm sure most of us would thank you and move on.
My comment is " how can you leave your app on the store with no support for iOS 4?" you warn no one that it won't work with iOS 4 and you just basically abandoned everyone who already paid for it. pull the app or fix it.
I have the free version. I think it's the most recent because I've had it about 10 days. It crashes frequently and the controls often don't respond (eg the cancel option when selecting the bottom right icon in a recipe). I've been trying to enter one of my new recipes to no avail as it crashes before I can complete the entry. Moreover each attempt creates a new entry and there is no means to delete the duplicate - or at least none that I've been able to locate.
